The Lockinge Stakes takes centre stage this Saturday, with the seasonal reappearance of the amazing Frankel. Henry Cecil has said during the week that the horse has trained well, and although he will come on a little for the race, he should still take all the beating. Unbeaten after nine starts, Frankel has no problems with the ground or trip and jockey Tom Queally knows him best of all. He will be short in the market, at around the 4/11 mark, but should win and those looking for a bet will be looking at a forecast or each way shot. The race is scheduled to start at 3.40pm at Newbury and many eyes will be looking on throughout the world. Each way chances, at a price, in the race would be Dubawi Gold and Ransom Note. Both need Frankel to slip up, but they should be running their races and hopefully one of them will snatch that second spot for the forecast. It is an eight race card at Newbury on Saturday, with four of those being shown live on Channel 4. Newbury is a left handed galloping track, that is a true track when the going is good or on the fast side. Saturday’s ground is expected to be good to soft in places, but mainly good all over. Poptelecom sponsor the majority of races at Newmarket this Saturday, and their feature race is the Fairway Stakes at 2.15pm. Only five go to post, so a little disappointing, but they do appear to have a touch of quality and the one that takes the eye is John Dunlop’s Farhaan. He needs to prove his fitness on this seasonal debut, but has apparently been working well and so should go well over a course and distance that looks suitable. Henry Cecil has entered Noble Mission who will be popular, but that will be indicated in the price and the value lies with Farhaan. It is an eight race card at Newmarket, with the first race due off at 1.40pm.Bangor On Dee, Doncaster, Thirsk, Uttoxeter and Wexford make up the rest of Saturday’s action.

Sunday’s racing is never as good as that on a Saturday, but there are always many betting opportunities and this Sunday isn’t any different. Market Rasen host a jumps card and the race that takes the eye is the Handicap Chase at 4pm. Clever Dick has been entered by David Pipe, and if he takes his chance, then he will be out to prove a few doubters wrong. The handicapper will let him run off a mark of 97 if he makes the race, so with that and the trip and ground not a concern, he looks worthy of an each way bet at what should be decent odds. Market Rasen is a sharp, right handed, undulating track with easy fences. Limerick, Navan, Ripon and Stratford make up the rest of Sunday’s action. The weather has improved, so hopefully all meetings will go ahead.

So much rain about in the UK at the moment, which is playing havoc with fixtures in the UK. However, the rain is expected to relent a little for this weekend, which is good news for all concerned. Ascot hold a decent flat card, with three of the eight races being screened live on Channel Four. John Gosden, Ed Dunlop & Brian Meehan, to name but a few, are top trainers taking their charges to Ascot, and with the prizemoney not too bad, they. Amongst many others, will be hoping the rain does stay away as expected. Ryan Moore and Hayley Turner have fair records at the track, so worth checking their rides and prices throughout the afternoon. Nobody will forget Frankie Dettori riding every winner on an Ascot card many moons ago, and with him booked for just the one ride at Ascot, many eyes will be looking to see if Frankie makes the ride or goes for his three at Lingfield ( I hope they don’t hold their breath!). King Of Jazz has been talked up throughout this week and runs in the 3.25 race, and with trainer Michael Bell being bullish about his chances, it could be a winner for Hayley Turner, who is booked to ride. Ascot is a right-handed, galloping tesing track, which becomes much more testing with soft ground. Haydock holds a seven race card and it is a mix of flat and jumps, so fans of both codes will get their kicks. The 2.00 race starts of proceedings and is over hurdles, and with hearing that Torphichen is expected to go well at decent odds, it could be a winner for trainer Alan King. As far as the flat racing goes, it looks tough to pick winner this early in the season at this track, but if a bet has to be had, then Majestic Myles could be the one. Goes on the ground and stays the trip well, so with jockey Paul Hanagan riding very well at the moment, he looks well worth a bet. Haydock is a left handed galloping track, so like Ascot, will be testing in soft conditions. Chester hold a card, and although you always have to look for a low draw in sprint races, the ground could make that statistic look a bit silly come race time. However, it is tough to look at a high draw, as this track is like a greyhound track, so getting a good early position is vital over a sprint trip. Good luck if betting here in soft ground.

Sunday sees Plumpton, Uttoxeter and Worcester hold cards, so joy for jumps fans during what is now the flat season?? Anyhow, despite that, a few races take the eye, and they include the 3.00 at Uttoxeter (Just Joe), 4.10 Plumpton (Hit The Headlines) and 3.50 Worcester (Cadoudalas). Betfair look the boookmakers to bet with this weekend, as although they are online only, they will be offering, by far, the best odds around. All in all, let us all hope the rain stays away.

Betfred and Bet365 sponsor the main part of Saturday’s racing and so betting with them should bring in lots more offers than other bookmakers. Betfred sponsor six of the seven races at Ripon and their feature would have to be the handicap at 3.30pm. Shubaat will be popular from Roger Varian’s stable, and rightly so, as he has done nothing wrong to date. However, preference would be for Halla San to run a big race at double figure odds. He is fit from the flat and can stay on strongly enough to be in the mix for the line. Richard Fahey is popular at Ripon and he has been on record this week as fancying the chances of Halla San, so an each way bet on him is the call. The Ripon meeting starts at 2.20pm and ends at 5.45pm, with the 2.20pm and 3.30pm races being shown live on Attheraces (whole card) and Channel Four. Sandown has its meeting sponsored by Bet365 and so worth looking out for their specials on the meeting. The race that takes the eye is the Gold Vup chase at 3.10, as many old favourites line up. The ground is expected to go with plenty of cut, so look out for those runners who like to get their toe in. One with a decent chance at decent odds is the Paul Nicholls trained Tidal Bay. Jumps well and stays well, he should be able to run his natural race and be involved in the finish. Nicholls always has his horses in prime condition before a race, so no worries about fitness issues. Sandown eight race card kicks off at 1.30pm, with the lucky last being at 5.20pm. Sandown is a right handed, galloping, testing track, so runners will need to be on top form. Channel Four are showing the second, third, fourth and fifth races on the card, so along with Racing UK (showing the card) you shouldn’t miss any of the action. Doncaster (evening), Haydock (evening), Market Rasen and Punchestown (Ireland) make up the rest of Saturday’s action.

Sunday sees meetings from Ludlow, Navan and Wetherby, and with rain expected to fall all over the country on Sunday, the meetings will have their inspections and hopefully all will get the go-ahead. If they do go-ahead, then the race to work around would be the 3.35pm at Wetherby. It is a chase over 3 miles 1 furlong and the runner that takes the eye is Mark The Book. He is an in and out performer, but stays the trip and goes on the ground, and if he wants it he does have every chance of winning. A risk is taken on how he feels on the day, but the odds make him well worth a chance. Trainer Ben Case doesn’t have many horses in his yard and this one would be one of his best, if not the best, so connections will be hoping for a return. Dominic Elsworth gets the ride, and he certainly knows the time of day.

Betfred, Betfair and Tote sponsor the vast majority of races on Saturday, so bookmakers obviously doing well enough in the current climate. The flat season well under way now and Kempton hosts a decent enough card to be interested in on Saturday, with Betfred sponsoring each and every race on the card. The 1 mile handicap at 2.05 looks the race to start with, as with the handicapper appearing to have the race on a pin head, it’s not easy to pick the winner. Those that appear to have chances at the weights are Double Dealer and Robemaker. Both come from decent yards and no surprise to see either of them win this race, if of course they make the final declarations and get to the race in one piece. Mick Channon has been doing fairly well over the jumps in recent weeks, which is a bit of a surprise, but it proves his stable are firing on all cylinders and so it will be no surprise to see Montaff defy his recent poor form and go close at a massive price. The trip and surface shouldn’t be of any concerns and despite top weight, he does have every chance if finding his best. The race should be run to suit and he is at a cracking price, so an each way bet wouldn’t go amiss. Haydock has Betfair slobbering all over it and the biggest betting exchange will have plenty of special offers on show for all racegoers. Presenting Ace has been working well according to David Pipe and so why bother looking any further than his for an each way bet. The trip and ground should be fine and he does have the back form to go close. Haydock is a left handed, galloping track, with stiff fences and hurdles, whereas Kempton’s all weather circuit is a right handed fair track. Cork, Carlisle, Musselburgh and Newton Abbot make up the rest of UK racing on Saturday.

Sunday sees Musselburgh, Plumpton and Towcester taking centre stage, and Plumpton is always a nice place to visit, if of course the weather’s nice. The Tote sponsor the seven race card and the handicap chase at 4.05 will be of much interest to gamblers and racegoers alike. Venetia Williams has spoke quite highly of Only The Best during the week and a par performance can see him run a massive race. Towcester is always tough to pick winners at, so good luck to anybody playing there. Many punters will be keeping their powder dry for the upcoming Aintree meeting, which of course features the Grand National. That all kicks off next Friday, with the big race itself on Saturday. Back to this Sunday and another runner that appears worthy of a little bet is Bowdler’s Magic in the Betfred Gold Cup at Musselburgh at 3.50. He’s 9 years old but entitled the be there or thereabouts on Sunday. Cork and Fairyhouse make up the remainder of the Sunday’s cards.

Things gradually getting back to normal after the Cheltenham Festival, and the better horses now looking ahead to Liverpool and Aintree – the Grand National in particular. However, it is bread and butter stuff until then and many will be off to Newbury on Saturday for a fairly decent card. It isn’t top class, but several decent horses take their chances. The race to focus on for punters would be the Ultima Business Solutions Handicap Chase at 3.40, as with being over a long trip of 3 miles 2 furlongs, and the ground expected to be good, it does give a great chance to the Emma Lavelle trained Ouzbeck. He gets in off a decent weight and is expected to run a big race if he makes the it to the races in one piece. On Borrowed Wings and Mon Parrain look his biggest dangers. The race will be screened live on Channel 4 and Racing UK, so no reason for armchair viewers to miss out, either. Ultima sponsor the day at Newbury on Saturday, and another of their races that takes the eye is the 2.40. It’s the hurdle finale over 2 miles 5 furlongs and with Nicky Henderson fancying the chances of Heather Royal, and with him taking Cheltenham by storm last week, it’s obvious his horses are flying at present, and with him fancying it himself, then I wouldn’t be looking any further than Heather Royal to run a big race. Newbury is a left handed, galloping track with stiff fences, so runners will need to be on their games to be thinking of taking home any prize money. Lingfield host an all weather card, as they seem to do every other day, but this Saturday bring the live cameras to the venue and they have four races live on Channel 4. The Blue Square sponsored 2.25 race looks very interesting, as with Richard Hannon’s Gusto making an appearance and looking for a three timer, he should run his race and therefore be involved in the fight for the finishing line. The trip and surface isn’t a concern, so worthy of a check in the market before the race. Blue Square sponsor the whole card at Lingfield, so if having a bet, then well worth checking to see what special offers they have to offer.

Sunday’s racing is average, as per normal, but that won’t put off the locals who just love to go to Hexham and have a bet. They host a seven race card, and with the 4.10 race looking the most interesting from a betting perspective, most punters will be delving into the form book. I like the look of Atherstone Hill, as although he pulled up last time, he did show more than enough ability before that, so I’m willing to give him another chance. He jumps well and stays the trip, so all being well he should give a good account of himself. Wincanton host a meeting on Sunday, so worth a look, despite picking winners being quite difficult at this track – time to get that lucky pin out.

The Cheltenham Festival still in many minds from the past several days, but over now and back to the bread and butter. Betfred crack on with sponsoring the card at Uttoxeter on Saturday, and that ensures plenty of special offers from them throughout the day, so they would be the firm to bet with. The Midlands Grand National is without doubt the spectacle of the day at 3.20, and many of the big trainers will be looking to take the race after drawing a blank at the Festival. A few to consider over the 4 mile 1 furlong trip are Mr Moss, Ballyfitz, Posh Bird and Ballyfoy. None can be confident selections, but if having a bet, then either are capable of big runs. Nigel Twiston-Davies, who trains Ballyfitz, has been on record this week as saying that the horse is well and he expects him to run to his best, so worth an each way pop at a price. The 7 race card throws up a few other decent races, and delving into those you would come out with Boston Blue in the opening race. Tony Carroll trains and after a recent run on the flat, the horse comes into this nice and fit and should go well at a decent price. Red.com sponsor the 7 race card at Kempton, and with good ground expected, the races should be run at fair all round paces. I like the 32RedPoker Handicap Chase at 4.00, as with hearing Venitia Williams is hoping to go close with Nobunaga, that will do for me, so hopefully he will stay sound and make the race. Kempton is a right handed, sharp, flat track, so pretty fair and the form usually holds up quite well. Other meetings on Saturday are from Down Royal (Ireland), Ffos Las (Wales), Newcastle, Wexford (Ireland) and Wolverhampton, so plenty to get stuck into.

Sunday cards are Carlisle, Limerick (Ireland), Newton Abbot and Navan (Ireland), and it will pay to wait until as late as you can before placing a bet due to the expected weather change. Good ground as it stands, but rain is expected in certain spots throughout the UK, so they could easily change. As it stands, the races I like are the 3.15 at Newton Abbot and the 3.00 at Carlisle. Starting with the 3.15, Henry Daly likes the chances of Quentin Collonges and so no reason to look any further than him, if he takes his chances. The 3.00 at Carlisle sees Nobunaga being entered, so if things do not turn out right on Saturday for him, he may be heading here and that would be a good sign to take a chance on him.Carlisle is a right handed, galloping, testing and undulating track, so runners certainly need to be on their games. If the ground does cut up on Sunday, then it could be worth looking at Ladbrokes, Coral, William Hill and Paddy Power for their special bets, such as winning distances, etc. Also, there is always the faithful Placepot for those who like a bet in every race.

Newbury takes centre stage on Saturday and all eyes will be on the Barbury International Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup (Handicap Chase) at 3.10pm. £22,700 up for grabs for the winner, and a few to take a look at in the betting are Aerial, Dave’s Dream and Mad Max. Dave’s Dream would be very interesting on his older form, and despite not being at his best in recent runs, the blinkers now go on and they could quite easily spark a revival. Not been running too bad, but lacks that little bit of sparkle that hopefully the blinkers will return. Nicky Henderson, who trains the horse, has said during the week that he expects a decent enough run from Dave’s Dream, so worth a bet. It’s a 7 race card at Newbury on Saturday and another race that is well worth a look at is the Ladbrokes Supporting Greatwood Handicap at 3.45pm. Looks a tough race to solve, but I can say that David Pipe is quite hopeful that Balgarry will run a big race, so if having to have a bet, then he could be the one. Should be a great race to watch though, betting or no betting. Ladbrokes sponsoring the race will have plenty of special offers, so worth taking a look at them if wanting a bet. Newbury is a left handed, galloping track, with stiff fences, so runners will be needing to be on their games – good to soft ground is expected and with the weather appearing to be quite settled, it shouldn’t change too much. Channel 4 are showing several races from Newbury and Doncaster and at Doncaster there are a couple of races that take the eye. The William Hill Handicap Hurdle at 2.20pm gets the ball rolling, and with Corkage and Sir Harry Ormesher lining up, it could be a case of picking between the two of them. Others have chances, but on this ground and over the trip, they both should run their races and therefore be involved in the finish. The other races are tricky to solve, so good luck if delving into those. Kelso in Scotland host a card on Saturday, and although no races are televised on terrestrial TV, the Scots will be out in numbers, as per usual, to support their local tracks. The Totepool Premier Kelso Hurdle is a race to delve into, as with 5 of the 6 runners winning last time out, it should be a cracker. Tony McCoy is booked to ride Captain Conan for Nicky Henderson, so that in itself is a tip and he is worth a check in the market. Totepool sponsor and so a bet with them should ensure a few special offers.

Sunday sees Huntingdon, Leopardstown and Sedgefield take centre stage, and Sedgefield looks well worth a visit for locals. John Wade sponsors the first race and with him being a local businessman and having his fair share of horses, plenty will be willing Dingo Bay to win, and he should be quite a nice price. Good racing for a Sunday, so racegoers and fans have been a little spoilt.

It is Eider Chase day at Newcastle on Saturday, which is a big occasion for those in the north east of England. This year the race is sponsored by Betfred, so if having a bet it is best to go to them for plenty of special offers on the race. The race itself is not easy to solve, but a few that have good chances of hitting the money are Eyre Square from the Keith Reveley yard, Morgan Be from Kate Walton’s yard, and Mister Marker from Nicky Richard’s yard. All three have a decent chance of the marathon trip, and with the ground riding well, they should go well if avoiding any errors. The race is due to start at 3.25pm and will be screened live on Channel 4 and At The Races. Betfred sponsor all seven races at Newcastle on Saturday and so those making their way to the track should be able to benefit from their generous sponsorship. Word of mouth this week points to Helpston running a big race in the 4.35pm race for Pam Sly, as she’s been on record as saying she fancies the horse to take this race. Newcastle is a left handed, galloping, testing track, with stiff fences that ensure runners will need to be on their games and very well schooled. Elsewhere on Saturday, Lingfield, Kempton and Chepstow hold meetings, and the pick of what they have to offer would be the Rifles’ Handicap at Chepstow (3.45pm) and the Dovecote Hurdle at Kempton (3.40pm). The latter brings in Zarzal as an interesting runner from the flat, and that one could be worth a bet now going over hurdles. Evan Williams knows how to get them ready and would have schooled his runner well at home coming into the race. The Rifles’ Handicap at Chepstow is interesting, and the one that catches the eye is Oh Crick, not because of his recent form, but the fact that the blinkers go on his for the first time. He’s looked as though he needs them, so could actually improve a few pounds for wearing them and that could be the deciding factor. Generally jumps and stays the trip well, so worth a bet.

Sunday’s action sees racing from Fontwell, Naas and Towcester, with Fontwell being the better of the three from a betting perspective. It is also a lovely venue and anybody visiting the track is in for a treat. As for the racing, they hold a seven race card and the Totesport National Spirt Hurdle at 3.40pm looks the race to take a bit of time over. The ground should be on the good to soft side, which will suit many of the runner, but I particularly fancy Afsoun to make his presence felt in this line up, so it will be disappointing if he is not fighting out the finish. Towcester and Naas are also expected to be racing on good to soft ground, so when looking at the form, remember to note horse that like just a little give in the ground.

At last the weather relents and organisers can focus on what really matters. Some good racing this weekend, with fixtures from Ascot, Haydock and Wincanton being the feature meetings. Ascot looks a great card and each of the 7 races are of interest. The Reynoldstown Chase at 1.50pm has produced some great winners over the years and Join Together and Walkon will be looking to join them. Paul Nicholls and Alan King have both said during the week that they expect big runs for their charges, so both look worth a few pennies. Paul Nicholls is always popular when it comes to the big races, so although many of his are under priced, they still usually deliver the goods. The Betfair Chase at 3pm has been eagerly awaited, with trainers trying to keep their runners on the boil the past couple of weeks. I like the look of Medermit for this, as the trip and ground suits and the race has plenty of pace about it. Alan King trains him and has said that all has gone very well in preparations, so Robert ‘Chocolate’ Thornton should get the best out of him. Several top class dangers, but Medermit gets the nod. Another Betfair sponsored handicap at 3.35pm looks a tough puzzle to solve, but that’s half the fun of horse racing. Many come into the race with chances, with many of the top trainers looking to claim the money. Mad Moose is getting on in years now, but still retains ability and could pop up at a nice price, and the same goes with Dunraven Storm. Nicky Henderson, Phillip Hobbs, Paul Nicholls and Alan King all have runners, so all the top trainers involved. Ascot is a right handed, galloping, testing track, with stiff fences. The Betfred Grand National Trial takes place at Haydock at 3.20pm and plenty of pointers can be had for the big one in April. I like the look of Neptune Collonges, trained by Paul Nicholls, as he stays and jumps well, so should be involved in the finish. Plenty of other races to take an interest in, so good luck studying those. Gowran Park and Lingfield make up Saturday’s action.

Sunday sees Ffos Las, Navan and Market Rasen take centre stage, with Ffos Las’ 7 race card looking the better of the three. The Dunraven Welsh Foxhunters Hunters Chase at 4.10pm is the highlight, as despite being amateurs, the race is always a good spectacle. Whispers suggest that Heron’s Well and Sunday City will run well, so those two are worth keeping an eye on in the betting. Ffos Las is a left handed, flat, galloping track, and is gaining a fast reputation of being one of the fairest tracks in the UK, despite being the newest. Market Rasen is a right handed, sharp, undulating track with easy fences, so completely different to Ffos Las, but still worth a look with competitive racing. All meetings should go ahead, so a weekend to look forward to.

Yet again the weather is playing havoc with UK racecourses, with Newbury and Musselburgh praying the cold snap relents. Newbury, especially, will be hoping to stay alive, as with Betfair sponsoring a great looking 8 race card, it will be a big shame if they do not get the go-ahead. The Denman Chase at 2.35 sees Long Run looking to get another valuable win under his belt, and to be honest he should collect with the opposition not looking up to his class. He jumps well and should win if staying on his feet. A strange move is the fact that Channel 4 are showing 4 races live from Newbury, but aren’t showing the Grade 1 Chase at 1.30! So, quite bizarre, but Racing UK viewers will not bother about that. Lucinda Russell will be out to topple the big boys with her charge Bold Sir Brian, and although he will need to be at least at his best, he should run his race and give the others plenty to think about. All the races at Newbury are competitive on Saturday, so picking winners isn’t easy and maybe the angle in is to play permutations in the Placepot pool. Musselburgh host a pretty average card, it has to be said, so although it will be good if they escape the weather, it’s not too exiting to be worrying that much about it. Santa’s Son should go well in Scottish Champion Chase at 2.50, and that would be my only each way bet at the meeting. Lingfield and Kempton have all weather cards lined up, so there is always those to fall back on if the weather bites (of course, unless they get frozen!). Several of the top flat trainers have runners at Kempton, and with reading in the week that Richard Hannon expects a big run from Haafhd Handsome in the 3.00 race, that’s worth a bet straight away. Mick Channon has runners at the track, so well worth keeping an eye on them with Channon not known for bringing runners out during the cold. Rasheed in the 4.45 race is interesting from the great John Gosden’s yard, and I for one will be checking the odds on that one. Lingfield seems to have a meeting every other day, but it’s a fair track and is very popular with locals and all weather fans. Lingfield is a left handed all weather circuit.

Sunday will probably see just Southwell’s all weather card left after the weather biting , but hopefully the cards from Hereford and Exeter will pass their inspections and go ahead. Exeter would be more confident of going head, so hopefully many will get to have a few pennies on Inside Dealer running a big race in the 3.00. Colin Tizzard hasn’t said the horse will definitely run, but has also said that if he does then he will run well. Exeter is a right handed, very undulating and testing track, so runners will need to be pretty versatile.
